What "Bespoke," "Made-to-Order," "Private Order" and "One of One" Actually Mean
What "Bespoke," "Made-to-Order," "Private Order" and "One of One" Actually Mean

At VLAD BYKOV, six terms name six different things. Stock is a finished piece, ready to ship. Made-to-Order is an existing model produced for you in standard sizing. Made-to-Measure adapts an existing pattern to your measurements. Bespoke builds fit and construction around you. Private Order goes outside the current range. One of One is made once, for one owner.
What is the difference between Stock, Made-to-Order, Made-to-Measure, Bespoke, Private Order and One of One?
These six terms get used loosely across the luxury industry. At VLAD BYKOV they mean six specific things, and knowing the difference will help you order the right piece the first time.
The difference between them is how much of the piece already exists before you order, and how much is made for you.
Read from top to bottom, the table is a ladder. Each step leaves less to what already exists and gives more to the person the piece is made for.
Why are these terms used so loosely?
Because none of them is a protected term. Any brand can put "bespoke" or "one of one" on a product page, and nothing obliges it to mean the same thing as the brand next door.
The word bespoke comes from the verb bespeak, which in the sixteenth century acquired the meaning "to order or arrange in advance": bespoke described clothes and other things ordered before they were made (Merriam-Webster). In tailoring it came to mean a garment cut from a pattern drafted for one customer alone.
In June 2008 the UK Advertising Standards Authority ruled that an advertisement could describe a made-to-measure suit, largely cut and sewn by machine, as bespoke, finding the word unlikely to mislead (Bespoke tailoring). From then on, the strictest word in the vocabulary could be advertised for the tier below it.
The newer terms have gone the same way. A definition is therefore only as good as the house that stands behind it, and the six below are the definitions this House works to.
What is Stock?
Stock is a finished piece, ready to ship — what you see is exactly what you receive.
Nothing about a Stock piece is decided after you order. The model, the material, the color and the size already exist, which is why Stock is the fastest route: delivery within the UAE can be as fast as approximately one business day, depending on location and availability. The wider industry calls the same idea ready-to-wear or off-the-shelf.
The House's finished pieces are listed on vladbykov.ae, where every model has a page with its price and sizes; Italian suede mules, for example, are listed at $800 as of October 2026. Stock remains the right choice for a large share of what guests need, and it is a lower-commitment first way to experience the House.
What is Made-to-Order (MTO)?
Made-to-Order (MTO) is an existing model, produced specifically for you within the House's standard construction and available sizing. You choose from what already exists; production starts once you order.
The difference from Stock is not the design but the moment of making. A Stock pair was finished before you saw it. A Made-to-Order pair does not exist until you order it, so it is made for you rather than taken from a shelf.
Timing follows from that. Made-to-Order footwear with material already in stock takes approximately two-and-a-half to three weeks, and the piece keeps the model's base price: you pay for the material and the craftsmanship, not for individual development.
What is Made-to-Measure (MTM), and how is it different from Bespoke?
MTM (Made-to-Measure) takes an existing system — a shirt block, a trouser pattern — and adapts it to your own measurements. The model stays the same; the fit becomes yours.
Made-to-Measure and Bespoke are the two terms most often confused, because both involve a tape measure. The difference is the starting point. Made-to-Measure starts from a pattern that already exists and alters it. Bespoke starts from the person, with no existing pattern to adapt.
The tailoring trade draws the same line: made-to-measure uses a standard pattern altered to fit the customer, while a bespoke garment is cut from a pattern drafted for that customer alone. The House's guide What Is Bespoke? follows that distinction through the whole tailoring process.
Choose Made-to-Measure when the model is already right and only the fit is not.
What does Bespoke mean at VLAD BYKOV?
Bespoke goes further: fit and construction are built around your measurements from the start, not adapted from an existing pattern.
A bespoke commission at the House moves through clear stages, and one specialist stays with it from the first conversation to the finished piece:
- Request. You submit a bespoke request through the form on the House's site, and a specialist contacts you for a first discussion.
- Consultation. A private meeting in Dubai or a video call defines the style, the materials and the future design.
- Material. The leather type, grade and color are confirmed before cutting begins, because changing the material later means starting over.
- Construction. The piece is made on the House's production timeline, with quality checks built into each stage rather than added at the end.
- Fit. The process closes with fit confirmation, not with delivery: a finished pair that does not fit correctly is not considered complete.
A request is not yet an order. A bespoke commission is confirmed only once the specifications and commercial terms have been agreed and the House has accepted the order; the Bespoke terms set this out in full.
What a guest can decide in bespoke goes well beyond size: the design itself, the color composition, the leather and its finish, thread colors, sole finish, lining and hardware. The Journal describes bespoke work for named guests of the House: seven bespoke one-of-one pairs for Conor McGregor and a personal pair of loafers for Jacob Arabo.
What is a Private Order?
Private Order is for something more individual still — a special material, an unusual color, a construction solution that doesn't exist in the current range. Every Private Order is priced and timed individually.
"Private order" gets used across the industry to mean almost anything. At VLAD BYKOV it refers to a specific type of commission — direct, discreet, and built around a guest's individual requirements from the first conversation.
A private order typically starts with a direct conversation with the House, rather than a standard online configurator flow — sizing, material preference, and any special requests are discussed one-to-one before the commission is confirmed.
Discretion is part of the definition, not an add-on. A private order can involve a design detail, an engraving, or a commission the guest doesn't want documented publicly — the House handles these requests as a matter of course, without needing to be asked twice.
It sits alongside, not above, the House's standard made-to-order process — a private order simply reflects a guest who wants more direct involvement in the process, more discretion, or a request outside the standard configuration.
Any guest can request this level of engagement — it isn't reserved for a specific tier of client. A guest who wants to work directly with the House on a commission, rather than through a standard order flow, can simply ask.
One Private Order service has its own name. Automotive Color Bespoke translates the exterior color of a guest's own car into suede or crocodile leather, and each piece is developed around one vehicle.
What does One of One mean?
One of One is the top of that ladder: a single specification, made for one owner only, with uniqueness explicitly promised — not just personalized, genuinely singular.
"One of one" is one of the most overused phrases in luxury marketing — used, often, for pieces that are simply made-to-order in an existing design with a color swap. At VLAD BYKOV it means something more specific, and it's worth being precise about the difference.
A true one-of-one commission means the design itself does not exist anywhere else. Not a variation on a catalog silhouette — a piece conceived from the guest's specific request, whether that's an Automotive Color Bespoke match to a particular car, an unusual skin combination, or a construction detail built for one person's exact preference.
This is different from bespoke or made-to-order. Bespoke means built to your measurements within the House's design language. One-of-one means the design itself is unrepeated — no second guest will ever be offered that exact piece.
Because of that, one-of-one commissions take longer, cost more, and involve more direct back-and-forth with the atelier than a standard bespoke order. That's not a limitation — it's the honest cost of building something that will never exist again.
The House is selective about which requests become true one-of-one pieces, because the phrase only means something if it's protected. A House that calls everything one-of-one has made the term meaningless — VLAD BYKOV reserves it for commissions that actually earn it.
The Divine Dozen shows what that promise looks like when it is written down: twelve crocodile handbags, each in its own color and finish, each signed, numbered and archived, and none to be recreated or made to order.
Bespoke vs Made-to-Order vs Made-to-Measure: what is the difference?
Made-to-Order produces an existing model in the House's standard sizing. Made-to-Measure adapts an existing pattern to your measurements. Bespoke builds fit and construction around you from the start. With the first you choose from what already exists; with the last the piece starts from you.
Bespoke and One of One are the pair most often merged into one. A commission can be both, as the pairs made for Conor McGregor were, but they answer different questions: Bespoke says how the piece fits, One of One says whether the design will ever be offered again.
How long does each order type take?
Stock ships at once; everything else is made after you order, and timing depends on the product and on how personalized it is. Made-to-Order footwear with material already in stock takes approximately two-and-a-half to three weeks, and more individual, measurement-based footwear approximately three-and-a-half to five weeks.
By category, tailoring and clothing take approximately three to four weeks, depending on the piece, and bags approximately four to five weeks. A Private Order, a special leather or a newly developed material receives an individual estimate, communicated before payment: this is the one case where timing cannot be generalized, because it depends on sourcing.
Personalization — initials, a special lining, a specific thread color — can add roughly a week to any of the above.
If you're working against a fixed date — a trip, an event — mention it when you order, and your advisor will flag early if the timeline needs adjusting.
Is Bespoke more expensive than Made-to-Order?
Usually, yes, and the reason is time and material rather than the word. A Stock or standard Made-to-Order piece carries the model's base price, and each step above it adds individual work.
Bespoke and Private Order pricing is confirmed individually, because a fully personalized construction — a specific measurement-based fit, an unusual color, a Private Order detail — doesn't map to a single fixed number the way a Stock or standard Made-to-Order piece does. Your advisor will confirm the exact price before you pay, once your specification is set.
A practical way to think about it: a Stock or standard Made-to-Order crocodile pair gives you the material and craftsmanship at the base price; Bespoke and Private Order add cost in proportion to how individual the piece becomes — not as a markup, but because sourcing and construction genuinely take longer and more material selection.
One of One sits above both. It takes longer and costs more than a standard bespoke order, because the design is developed once and never used again.
Which order type is right for you?
Start from what you need the piece to do, not from the word.
- You need it soon and a standard size fits you: Stock.
- The model is right, but the pair you want is not finished and waiting: Made-to-Order.
- The model is right and the standard fit is not: Made-to-Measure.
- Standard sizing has never fitted you, or you want the construction decided around you: Bespoke.
- You have a material, a color or a detail in mind that the range does not contain: Private Order.
- You want a piece whose design will never be offered to anyone else: One of One.
If you're not sure which category your idea falls into, that's normal — most Guests don't arrive already knowing. Message your advisor with what you have in mind, and they'll place it correctly.
Stock and standard Made-to-Order can be ordered on vladbykov.ae. Made-to-Measure, Bespoke, Private Order and One of One begin with a conversation with the House: through the Bespoke page or Contact, with a consultation in Dubai or by video call.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between bespoke and made-to-order?
Made-to-Order is an existing model produced for you within the House's standard construction and available sizing. Bespoke builds fit and construction around your own measurements from the start. With Made-to-Order you choose from what already exists; with Bespoke the piece starts from you.
What is the difference between made-to-measure and bespoke?
Made-to-Measure takes an existing pattern, such as a shirt block or a trouser pattern, and adapts it to your measurements: the model stays the same and the fit becomes yours. Bespoke does not adapt an existing pattern; fit and construction are built around you from the start.
What does Stock mean at VLAD BYKOV?
Stock is a finished piece, ready to ship: what you see is exactly what you receive. Model, material, color and size already exist, so nothing is decided after you order. Within the UAE, delivery of Stock products can be as fast as approximately one business day.
What is a Private Order?
A Private Order is a commission for something that does not exist in the current range: a special material, an unusual color or a construction solution. It starts with a direct conversation with the House, discretion is part of the definition, and every Private Order is priced and timed individually.
What does One of One mean?
One of One is a single specification made for one owner only, with uniqueness explicitly promised. The design itself does not exist anywhere else, and no second guest will ever be offered that exact piece. The House reserves the term for commissions that actually earn it.
Is every bespoke piece One of One?
No. Bespoke means the piece is built to your measurements within the House's design language. One of One means the design itself is unrepeated. A commission can be both, but only One of One carries the explicit promise that no second guest will be offered that piece.
How long does Made-to-Order take compared with Bespoke?
Made-to-Order footwear with material already in stock takes approximately two-and-a-half to three weeks. More individual, measurement-based footwear takes approximately three-and-a-half to five weeks. Personalization such as initials, a special lining or a specific thread color can add roughly a week.
Is Bespoke more expensive than Made-to-Order?
Usually, yes. A Stock or standard Made-to-Order piece carries the model's base price. Bespoke and Private Order add cost in proportion to how individual the piece becomes, because sourcing and construction take longer. The exact price is confirmed by your advisor before you pay.
Can anyone request a Private Order?
Yes. A Private Order is not reserved for a specific tier of client. A guest who wants to work directly with the House on a commission, with more involvement, more discretion or a request outside the standard configuration, can simply ask.
How do I know which order type I need?
You do not need to know in advance; most guests do not arrive already knowing. Describe what you have in mind to your advisor: the piece, the fit, the material and the date you need it by. The House will place the idea in the right category.
