What to Gift the Man Who Has Everything: A Bespoke Idea

By Vlad Bykov, Founder and Couturier, VLAD BYKOV Couturier House, Dubai · Published 30 October 2026
Give the man who has everything something he could not have bought himself: a piece made for him. At VLAD BYKOV that means a personal pair of mules or loafers with his name inside, or a bespoke commission he completes himself. A bespoke pair confirmed and paid for by 1 November is finished by 6 November.

What do you give a man who has everything?

Something he could not have arranged for himself. Another watch box, a rarer bottle or a heavier pen competes with things he has already chosen, and chosen well. What he cannot buy is a piece someone else set in motion around him: his colours, his size, his name inside, made once and for him alone.
Raising the budget does not solve it. Researchers at Stanford Graduate School of Business found that giver and recipient see the price of a present differently: the giver counts on a costlier gift earning more gratitude, while the recipient feels little or no extra appreciation for it. The price tag adds less to a gift than the giver hopes.
What changes the outcome is specificity. A pair built around something personal to him — a car he already owns, a skin he once mentioned admiring, a colour that means something to the two of you — carries its value in the detail. That is the idea behind every gift in this guide.

Why does a personal commission land when an expensive object does not?

Because it carries two things money alone does not: his own choices and an experience. Stanford research shows that people find a gift they asked for more thoughtful, and University of Toronto research shows that an experience brings giver and recipient closer than an object does. A bespoke commission is both at once.
In a series of five experiments, Francesca Gino and Francis Flynn found that recipients valued a present from their own wish list above one chosen without asking and judged it the more thoughtful of the two, while givers expected the opposite. A commission respects that finding without spoiling the surprise: you choose the occasion, he chooses the details.
Cindy Chan of the Rotman School of Management and Cassie Mogilner of UCLA Anderson found that an experience given as a present draws the recipient closer to the giver than a possession does, because it is felt more intensely. Yet 78 per cent of those surveyed had last given a material present.
A commission is an experience that ends in an object he keeps: a conversation about how he dresses, a choice of skin and colour, the moment the finished pair goes on for the first time. The object then carries the memory of the process every time he wears it.
There is also a detail that makes it unmistakably his. Writing about personal pairs, I put it this way: "In personal orders we place the owner's name inside the shoe. For me it is a special signature: a detail that says whom this work is dedicated to."

Which VLAD BYKOV gift suits which man?

Choose by how he lives. A classic dresser takes Italian suede loafers; a man who owns the basics, suede mules; a car collector, a pair in his car's colours; a man who lives between countries and warm climates, mules again — the shoe I consider made for exactly that life.

The Italian suede mules and loafers in the first rows are Stock pieces in EU 40–45. Everything below them is made for him after the order. Each piece is priced on request: your advisor confirms the price before payment.
The best gift in the table is usually one step outside his habits: a colour or a material he would not buy for himself on an ordinary day — a bolder tone, a combination of crocodile and suede. It moves his wardrobe somewhere new.
For a man who loves his car, Automotive Color Bespoke translates its exterior colour into suede or crocodile leather, and each piece is developed around one vehicle. No off-the-shelf gift can be that personal.
For the man who travels, I would choose mules without hesitation: "In my view, mules are the ideal shoe for a man who lives between countries, spends a lot of time in warm climates and can afford to wear a shoe with an open heel."

Can the gift be the commission itself?

Yes, and for a man who has everything it is often the better gift. Instead of guessing the finished piece, you give him the process: a first consultation with the House, in Dubai by private appointment or by video call, with the piece following once his measurements and choices are taken.
The order then runs as any Bespoke commission does:
  • You or he describe the piece through the form on the site or through Contact.
  • At a consultation, in Dubai by private appointment or by video call, the style, material and construction are defined.
  • His advisor confirms the exact price for that specification.
  • The House works on 100% prepayment, in US dollars, UAE dirhams or euros.
  • The piece enters production, and its window starts.
At the top of that ladder is One of One: a single specification for one owner, never offered again. For a man who has everything, it is the one category where "unique" is a promise rather than a description.

What is the VLAD BYKOV gift certificate, and how does it work?

It is a registered certificate with a nominal value, valid for 12 calendar months from the day of purchase. Under the House's regulations it pays for an individual order or for ready-made pieces; it states the holder's name, a personal number and the expiry date, and it is emailed when bought remotely.
The certificate is the form to choose when you want the gift in his hands on the day and the choice in his hands afterwards. The regulations on gift certificates set out how it works:
  • Who can use it. The certificate is registered: only the person whose details you give at purchase can present it.
  • What it pays for. An individual order made for him, ready-made pieces, or both, up to its nominal value.
  • How it is issued. On the House's letterhead, with an electronic copy where requested; bought remotely, it is sent to the email you provide.
  • How it is paid for. In cash or by bank transfer, in the amount of its nominal value.
  • Above or below the nominal. If his order costs more, he pays the difference; if less, the remainder is not paid out. Several certificates can be combined for one purchase.
  • Validity. Twelve calendar months from purchase, not extended. A lost certificate is not restored, and a certificate cannot be exchanged or refunded.
Agree the nominal value with your advisor when you buy it. A figure that covers the step you have in mind, a Stock pair or a full bespoke commission, saves him a second conversation about money.

How do you choose his size without asking him?

Look inside a pair he already wears: the size is usually marked on the insole or the lining. VLAD BYKOV makes men's footwear in EU 40–45 as standard and in EU 47, 48 and 49 on request. If you cannot check discreetly, give the commission or the certificate: a bespoke pair made to a guessed size is a risk.
Ask someone close to him if you cannot look yourself. Whatever you choose, confirm his size and preferred construction before ordering anything Made-to-Order or Bespoke: production starts only once the specification is confirmed, so a guessed size costs real time to correct.
If he sits between two sizes, give your advisor both; the House's guide to sizes explains how each model is meant to fit.
A Stock pair is the safest guess. Under the refund policy of vladbykov.ae, eligible standard-size footwear can be exchanged if the request is made within 14 days of delivery and the pair is unused, unworn and in its original condition and packaging. The House may offer another size, another model subject to availability and any price difference, or a credit for a future purchase; for a voluntary exchange, return and reshipping costs may be payable by the customer.
Pieces made to individual measurements, personal specifications, customised colours or initials cannot be returned or exchanged solely because of a change of mind. So the rule for a blind gift is simple: initials go on a pair whose size you know.

When should you order to have it by Christmas and New Year?

Count back from the date, using the outer end of each production window. To have a pair finished by 24 December, confirm and pay for bespoke footwear by 19 November and for Made-to-Order footwear by 3 December. For 31 December, add a week: 26 November and 10 December. Personalisation adds about a week.

The dates count the production window alone, at its longest, so that they hold. The window starts once the specification is approved and payment is received; a consultation or a measurement before that sits outside it. Delivery to his door comes after.
A bespoke order cannot be meaningfully rushed: every stage has its own skilled step. If a stated timeline is ever at risk, the House tells you around a week before the original deadline, with a realistic revised estimate.
If the date is already too close, give a Stock or Made-to-Order piece for the occasion and the bespoke commission, as a certificate, for afterwards. He opens something on the day, and the piece made for him follows in the new year.

What if he lives in Dubai, or in another country?

In the UAE a Stock piece is the last-minute route: delivery within the country can take about one business day, depending on location and availability. For a man abroad, count backwards: the production window first, then delivery to his country, then a few days for him to wear the pair in before the occasion.
Winter is the high season in Dubai, the months of evenings outdoors. The House receives guests in Dubai by private appointment, so the consultation itself can be the gift you book for him.
The House ships to guests in any country. Delivery cost and timing depend on the destination, and import duties or local taxes are separate from the price of the piece: ask your advisor how they apply to his country before you pay, so you know in advance whether anything will be due on delivery.
The House's guide to buying luxury shoes in Dubai reaches the same conclusion about gifts as this one: for a shoe, the better route is a commission the recipient completes himself.

What leather accessory should go with a shoe gift?

A belt in a coordinated tone. It is the most useful pairing, because he does not have to make a second matching decision himself. VLAD BYKOV makes crocodile belts, the Sovereign among them and belts in nubuck crocodile, in colours from cappuccino and sand to burgundy and turquoise.
Coordinated colour, not identical material, is what reads as intentional. A suede mule with a nubuck crocodile belt in a neighbouring tone looks chosen; the same skin repeated from belt to shoe can look like a uniform.
Avoid pairing two statement pieces. A bold Automotive Color Bespoke commission next to an exotic leather bag risks competing for attention; the accessory should support the main gift.
The House's crocodile belts are listed on vladbykov.ae, so the accessory can be chosen today even while the pair itself is still being specified.

What does a man who has everything still not have?

A piece that answers something he already loves. In my work the starting point is often an object he chose for himself — his car, his watch, a particular suit — and the shoes continue it: its tones in suede or crocodile leather, repeated in the piping, the stitching or the lining.
As I wrote about personal pairs: "I like the thought itself: if a man chooses his watch to suit his car, why not choose his shoes to suit it too?" And further: "The client already has a thing he loves, and we create shoes that complement it naturally and tie the details of the look together."
That is the gift I would give a man who has everything: a pair that belongs with the objects he already owns. Its best moment often comes weeks after the gift is opened, when the finished pair arrives with his name inside.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a VLAD BYKOV gift cost?
Every piece is priced on request: your advisor quotes the exact price for the chosen model, material and any personalisation before payment. The House works on 100% prepayment, in US dollars, UAE dirhams or euros, and a gift certificate can cover all or part of it.
Can I put his name or initials inside the shoes?
Yes, in a personal order: the House places the owner's name inside the shoe, and initials, a special lining or a thread colour add about a week to production. A personalised piece cannot be exchanged solely because of a change of mind, so confirm his size first.
What is the last day to order a bespoke pair for Christmas 2026?
For measurement-based footwear finished by 24 December, confirm the specification and pay by 19 November; with personalisation, by 12 November. Made-to-Order footwear can be confirmed until 3 December. Delivery to his country comes after these dates.
Is it too late to order a luxury gift in December?
Not for Made-to-Order footwear: confirmed by 3 December, it is finished by 24 December, and confirmed by 10 December, by New Year's Eve. A Stock piece from vladbykov.ae needs no production, and within the UAE delivery can take about one business day.
Can a gift certificate pay for a bespoke order?
Yes. Under the House's regulations, the certificate pays for an individual order or for ready-made pieces up to its nominal value. If the order costs more, the holder pays the difference, and several certificates can be combined for one purchase.
How long is the VLAD BYKOV gift certificate valid?
Twelve calendar months from the day of purchase, and the period is not extended. The certificate is registered to the person you name at purchase, cannot be exchanged or refunded, and is not restored if it is lost.
Can he exchange the shoes if the size is wrong?
Eligible standard-size footwear can be exchanged if it is unused and unworn, in its original condition and packaging, with the request made within 14 days of delivery. Pieces made to his measurements or specifications, or with initials, are not exchanged solely because of a change of mind.
Does VLAD BYKOV deliver gifts outside the UAE?
Yes. The House ships to guests in any country. Delivery cost and timing depend on the destination, and import duties or local taxes are separate from the price, so ask your advisor how they apply to his country before you pay.
Can I book a consultation with the House for him as a gift?
Yes. The first consultation takes place in Dubai by private appointment or by video call, where the style, material and construction are defined. Production starts only after the specification and price are agreed and payment is received, so the finished piece follows his own choices.
Does a pricier gift make the recipient appreciate it more?
Not by much. In Stanford research by Francis Flynn and Gabrielle Adams, givers expected a higher price to earn more gratitude, yet recipients felt little or no extra appreciation for the costlier gift. In later Stanford work, gifts the recipient had asked for were rated more thoughtful than unsolicited ones.
