Black and Orange: The First VLAD BYKOV Mules Inspired by a Rolls-Royce Ghost
Black and Orange: The First VLAD BYKOV Mules Inspired by a Rolls-Royce Ghost

The black and orange mules for a Rolls-Royce Ghost were one of the first pairs VLAD BYKOV Couturier House built around a client's car. A black base follows the Ghost's black body, an orange accent follows the orange line along its side, and the inside of the pair continues the black, orange and white of the cabin.
Why did the House start designing shoes around a car?
Because a car can say more about its owner than any logo. One source of the idea was the way Jacob & Co. worked with Bugatti: the watchmaker did not simply put the name of a car on a dial, it tried to carry the car's engineering and character into an entirely different object. I kept asking myself why almost nobody did the same in bespoke footwear.
"If the character of an automobile can be translated into watchmaking, why can it not be translated into shoes?" That question, which I described in the story of the Spectre pair, is where the automotive direction of the House began. The pair for the Ghost was one of the first real answers to it.
The rule was set from the start. No logo on the shoe and no literal copy of the car. The car has to be understood first, through its colours, contrasts and mood, and only then rebuilt in the language of footwear.
What did the Rolls-Royce Ghost bring to the design?
Three things: a colour, a line and a cabin. The owner's Ghost had a deep black exterior with a distinctive orange line along the body, and an interior that combined black, orange and white. Each of the three became a separate decision in the pair.
- Black set the main character of the pair, as it sets the character of the car.
- The orange accent referenced the line running along the exterior.
- The inside of the mules continued the black, orange and white of the cabin.
- Every material was then adapted to the design language of the House.
What the project proved mattered more than the colours. A car can give a pair far more than a shade to match. It can define the mood, the contrasts and the whole story of an individual pair.
Why does one orange line matter so much on a Rolls-Royce?
Because on a Rolls-Royce a line along the body is a signature, not an ornament. Such a line has a name at the marque, the coachline, and according to Rolls-Royce it is applied by hand with a fine brush, precisely 3 mm wide on Phantom, Cullinan and Ghost.
That is why the pair could not carry orange everywhere. On the Ghost the orange is a single line on a large black surface, and it works precisely because there is so little of it. The mules had to keep the same proportion: a quiet black base and one accent that the eye finds on its own.
How does a line on a car become a line on a shoe?
Through translation, not copying. On the car the accent is paint; on the mules it has to become a detail of footwear craft that sits where a line naturally runs on a shoe and follows its contour.
The cabin went inside. The black, orange and white the owner sees every day in his car continue in the interior of the pair, so outside the mules stay restrained and the full story is visible only to the man who wears them.
A pair like this must remain an independent piece of the House even when the car is not there. When the owner wears it beside the car that inspired it, the story comes together.
What is the Ghost pair made of?
Every element was chosen separately, as in every automotive project of the House: the primary material, the leather shade, the lining, the piping, the stitching and the sole.
How is the Ghost pair different from Orange Private Edition?
They share a colour but not an origin. Orange Private Edition is a collection whose signature is an entirely bright orange sole, born from a feeling rather than from a particular car. The Ghost pair was built around one car and one owner, and its orange is a single accent that follows that car's line.
Both ideas come from the same place. Whenever I sit in a Rolls-Royce with an orange interior, the colour is impossible not to feel: warm, alive, and deeply refined at the same time. Orange Private Edition turned that emotion into a collection. The Ghost pair turned one particular car into one particular pair.
What did the Ghost pair lead to?
To the Spectre. The Ghost pair showed that the method works, and the next project went further: mules in grey nubuck crocodile for a private client's MANSORY-modified Rolls-Royce Spectre, with slim black leather piping, a black sole, a light turquoise lining and contrasting hand stitching. I have described the Spectre project separately.
Both pairs follow the rule the House now puts in one line: one car, one owner, one pair. No project repeats another, because even two examples of the same model differ in exterior, interior, stitching, specification and owner.
Is this a collaboration with Rolls-Royce?
No. The Ghost pair is an independent design interpretation by VLAD BYKOV Couturier House for a private client, built around his own car. It is not an official collaboration, a licensed product or an endorsement, and Rolls-Royce is named only to identify the car that inspired the pair.
Can the House make a pair around your own car?
Yes. Almost any car with personal meaning can be the starting point: a Rolls-Royce, a Ferrari, a Bentley, a rare classic or an individually modified vehicle. The marque matters less than the story of the particular car and its owner.
The work starts with the car. The House studies images of the exterior and interior, the materials, stitching, colour accents and specification, and then develops a complete concept for the pair. The primary material, leather shade, lining, piping, stitching, sole, initials and inscriptions are each chosen separately. When needed, Italian artisans work on a special leather shade to bring it closer to the colour of the car, while the material keeps its own natural depth.
A bespoke project begins with a consultation, in person in Dubai or by video call.
Can you buy black and orange mules without a commission?
Yes. The ready model Black & Orange Mules — Bespoke Edition is built in the same palette: black nubuck crocodile with an Italian finish, black Italian suede, hand-stitched orange suede piping, a natural leather lining in black, orange and white, black stitching on the insole and a light, flexible black outsole. It is available as presented and can also be made to order.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are the VLAD BYKOV mules for a Rolls-Royce Ghost?
One of the House's first pairs built around a client's own car: a black base after the Ghost's black body, an orange accent after the orange line along its side, and an interior that continues the black, orange and white of the cabin.
Who were the Ghost mules made for?
For the private owner of a black Rolls-Royce Ghost, more than a year before the House's Spectre project. The client's name is not published; the pair was developed around his own car, its exterior and its cabin.
Why is the orange on the pair only an accent?
Because on the car it is a single line on a black body. Rolls-Royce applies its coachline by hand, 3 mm wide on the Ghost, and the pair keeps the same proportion: a quiet black base and one accent.
Is the Ghost pair a collaboration with Rolls-Royce?
No. It is an independent design interpretation by VLAD BYKOV Couturier House for a private client. It is not a collaboration, licensed product or endorsement; Rolls-Royce is named only to identify the car that inspired the pair.
How is it different from Orange Private Edition?
Orange Private Edition is a collection with an entirely bright orange sole, born from an emotion rather than a particular car. The Ghost pair was built around one specific car, and its orange is a single accent following that car's line.
What came after the Ghost pair?
The Spectre project: mules in grey nubuck crocodile for a private client's MANSORY-modified Rolls-Royce Spectre, with slim black leather piping, a black sole, a light turquoise lining and contrasting hand stitching.
Can VLAD BYKOV make mules around my own car?
Yes. The House studies images of the exterior and interior, then chooses the leather, shade, lining, piping, stitching, sole and initials separately. Consultations take place in person in Dubai or by video call.
Can I buy ready-made black and orange mules?
Yes. Black & Orange Mules — Bespoke Edition at vladbykov.ae combines black nubuck crocodile and black Italian suede with hand-stitched orange piping and a black, orange and white lining. It can also be made to order.
The Orange Edition mules from the section above, with the same orange as their signature, are shown in a film: When your mules match the Rolls-Royce interior on the House's YouTube channel.
