One source of inspiration for Vlad Bykov was the approach taken by Jacob & Co. in its work connected to Bugatti. The energy, engineering and character of the automobile were continued through an entirely different object of luxury: a mechanical watch.

What interested Vlad was not simply the use of a famous automotive name. It was the wider creative principle—the idea that one sophisticated object could be interpreted through the language of another art form.

“I have always admired the way Jacob & Co. approached Bugatti. They did not simply place the name of the automobile on a watch. They attempted to communicate its engineering and character. At one point, I began asking myself why almost nobody was developing a similar approach in bespoke footwear. If the character of an automobile can be translated into watchmaking, why can it not be translated into shoes?”

That question became the starting point for VLAD BYKOV’s experiments with automotive-inspired footwear.

The objective was never to place a car logo on a pair of mules or reproduce an automobile literally. Vlad Bykov wanted to create an independent luxury footwear piece in which the car would be revealed through materials, colors, stitching, leather piping, lining and the physical experience of the owner.

This became the foundation of bespoke automotive footwear by VLAD BYKOV.

VLAD BYKOV created one of its first automotive-inspired pairs more than a year ago for the owner of a black Rolls-Royce Ghost.

The automobile featured a deep black exterior with a distinctive orange line. Its interior combined black, orange and white.

These details became the foundation of the individual footwear design:

black established the main visual character of the automobile;

the orange accent referenced the line running along its exterior;

the interior of the mules continued the black, orange and white combination of the cabin;

every material was adapted to the design language of VLAD BYKOV COUTURIER HOUSE.

That first project demonstrated that an automobile could provide much more than a color reference. It could define the mood, contrasts and complete story of an individual pair.

To achieve this, the car cannot be copied literally. It must first be understood through its visual and emotional components and then reconstructed through the language of footwear design.

The new pair was created for a private client and inspired by his individually specified Rolls-Royce Spectre modified by MANSORY. That is why it was important for me to communicate the automobile not only through grey, black and light turquoise, but also through comfort.”

Every edge, shade and stitch has been carefully considered. Yet despite the complexity of its construction, the footwear must remain soft, light and comfortable.
